Preparing for Your Engagement Session | Austin Engagement Photographer

It’s time to celebrate your engagement!

Now that you have picked a date, a photographer, and probably a venue as well, you can celebrate! Those are some of the toughest decisions in wedding planning and you can cross them off your list! Hooray!! Now on to the fun stuff…. like your engagement session! If you’ve opted out of this shoot, no worries. If we do have a session scheduled, during your photoshoot you’ll have the chance to get to know us, experience how we shoot and how we handle posing and lighting. This session will make a HUGE impact on how your wedding day flows. We’ll arrive on your wedding day already knowing how you two interact, what your best poses are and how to photograph you in a genuine way. What we will learn about you during your engagement session is invaluable! You will feel like such a pro on your big day because of the great practice you had during your engagement session and that’s how it should be!

Scheduling and location

We normally suggest booking it at least 3-6 months in advance to avoid stress. Because our weekends are filled with weddings, we typically shoot engagements on weekday evenings.
As you start to plan for your engagement session, you will need to start brainstorming about location ideas. We LOVE it when couples pick a location that is special or sentimental to them in some way! If you can’t think of anywhere specific, don’t sweat it. We know all the best spots around town. We shoot everywhere: at farms, campuses, clients’ homes, breweries and downtown alleys. We’re serious! Do not shy away from crazy ideas! The more creative, the better!

Outfit Inspiration

If you are planning to have your engagement photos taken in a brewery, wearing a formal dress and tux wouldn’t make sense! You would stick out like a sore thumb, not to mention the funny looks you would be getting! Know your location, and dress appropriately. We love when couples make one of their outfits something they are comfortable in. Sometimes that means a sports jersey, a flannel or maybe your favorite pair of Toms!

Think about what you like to wear, what you look good in, and start there! There is nothing wrong with wearing your favorite dress for your engagement photos, instead of buying something new. If you feel confident, do your thing! We recommend sticking to a base color (denim, black, etc.) and about two more colors. Mixing too many colors can look busy and distract from your beautiful faces! It’s also a good rule of thumb to not mix patterns. This can look crowded and clash.

Remember, these are just guidelines, and there are always exceptions to the rule! Don’t be afraid to add in some fun, quirky ideas! Remember to be yourself and make it personal!
